10 Of The Most Bizarre Museums That Actually Exist

10 Of The Most Bizarre Museums That Actually Exist

Although museums have a reputation for being stuffy old places that children are dragged along too in order to learn, they have modernized in the last decade to make use of new technology. This has allowed museums around the world to create interactive displays and shows that teach visitors about the wonders of the universe, from how stars are born to what the prehistoric world of dinosaurs actually looked like.
However, not every museum has such a bold premise. Some have been created to inform people about rather strange aspects of the world or in order to celebrate the life of an odd individual. These museums don’t spend millions of dollars and don’t have expansive facilities but they do have a huge dedication to their subject matter, even if it is a little bit crazy.

The Kansas Barbed Wire Museum

Located in La Crosse, Kansas, this museum is dedicated entirely to barbed wire. The facility aims to teach people about the many different types of barbed wire and explain the influence the material has had on the history of the United Sates thanks to its use on the prairie. The Kasans Barbed Wire Museum has been running continually since 1970 and now displays more than 2,000 different samples.

The Museum of Broken Relationships

This award-winning museum began life as a travelling collection of items from failed relationships that had been donated. Eventually, the organizers were able to secure a permanent building in Zagreb, Croatia, where they now display a series of personal belongings along with descriptions about their importance and how they were involved in a doomed relationship. The museum hopes to encourage discussion of the fragility of human relationships and the factors that can contribute to their downfall.

Icelandic Phallological Museum

In case you are not entirely sure what the second word in the Icelandic Phallological Museum means, it is referring to the phallus – which is more commonly known as the penis. That’s right, Iceland has a museum dedicated entirely to penises. It is home to more than 215 individual sex organs from various creatures that live on both the land and in the sea. It even has a special section that focuses on whale penises.

Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum

The Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum was set up to celebrate instant noodles and their inventor Momofuku Ando. The Japanese businessman was responsible for creating instant noodles, instant ramen and Cup Noodles during his lifetime and their huge popularity has made both him and the food culturally important in the country. The Osaka based museum offers a history of the food, a biography on Ando and offers visitors the chance to make fresh noodles for themselves.

Sulabh International Toilet Museum

Set up by Sulabh International, a human rights group that aims to reform environment sanitation and waste management, the Toilet Museum is a facility that houses different types of toilets from around the world. Some of the exhibits date back to 3000 BC, showing the evolution of sanitation technology, showing exactly how far it has come to make toilets safer and more hygienic.

British Lawnmower Museum

As you might have guessed from the title, the British Lawnmower Museum is a place to celebrate the history of the lawnmower. It was set up by former racing driver Brian Radam and has become one of the authorities on vintage garden equipment, providing parts and advice to anyone interested. As well as housing a large collection of antique lawnmowers, the museum also has a detailed history of the machines.

The Mutter Museum

Originally set up to allow for further biomedical research and to educate the public about medicine and anatomy, the Mutter Museum is now more of a collection of medical oddities and unusual specimens. Included in the exhibit are examples of antique medical instruments, the tallest skeleton in North America, and wax models showing the human body and its internal workings. It also displays some strange items such as the tumor removed from President Grover Cleveland and some tissue from the thorax of John Wilkes Booth.

The Museum of Bad Art

The Museum of Bad Art was originally founded in 1993 with the aim of showing the world the worst pieces of artwork ever created. It has two separate locations in Dedham Square and Somerville in Massachusetts with a collection of more than 400 individual pieces and describes itself as “the world’s only museum dedicated to the collection, preservation, exhibition and celebration of bad art in all its forms.”

Avanos Hair Museum

The Avanos Hair Museum is rather strange on a number of different levels. Firstly, it is a museum that contains hair samples from more than 16,000 women from around the world. Secondly, it is located in an underground cave and the hair is willingly cut off from the visitors to be hung on the wall along with the name and address of the person donating the sample. Each year, owner Chez Galip chooses 10 pieces of hair at random and offers the women free pottery classes and a chance to stay in his guesthouse free of charge.

Good Vibrations Vibrator Museum

The Vibrator Museum in San Francisco has only been open for a few years but has already seen a huge numbers of visitors. Like many other entries on this list, it aims to tell the history of its subject matter and display examples of early vibrators. According to the museum, the sex toys were one of the first electrical machines ever created, with the original design dating back to 1869. It contains samples of early vibrators that were so large they had to be carried in a suitcase.

10 Of The Strangest Competitions Ever Created

10 Of The Strangest Competitions Ever Created

Most of the competitions that you will have competed in, attended, or even seen on television will have been of games that are common throughout the world. It might be contests that involve card games such as poker and bridge or even professional sports tournaments that see players and teams battle it out to see who is the best.
Not all competitions, though, feature established sports and games. They can actually be made up of strange activities that you would never have guessed people do competitively, just like the ones included on this list. Even more remarkable is the popularity of these apparently unusual competitions, which routinely see hundreds or even thousands of people take part.

World Worm Charming Championship

Originally founded in 1980, the World Worm Charming Championship has grown to become a large annual event, with hundreds of people taking part. The aim of the competition is to see who can entice the most worms to the surface in 30 minutes using just a pitchfork. Those taking part will then do their best to collect as many worms as possible, with the current record set at a staggering 511 worms.

World Gurning Championship

Gurning is the act of distorting your face to create a strange or funny facial expression and it was a popular pastime in many rural areas of England. In fact, many small villages would hold gurning competitions to see who could pull the best expression. It should come as no surprise then that there is a World Gurning Championship that takes place every year. The event sees competitors putting their heads through a horse collar and contorting their features in the most imaginable ways possible.

World Pea Shooting Championships

Pea shooting is something that most people only did when they were in school whey they tried to fight off boredom by firing small pieces of chewed up paper through a straw. In the English village of Witcham though, pea shooting is a serious business that involves those taking part trying to score as many points as possible by hitting targets. Entrants use extensive modifications to be as accurate as possible, including laser guides.

Baby Crying Contest

Most parents try to stop their babies from crying but in the annual baby crying contest at the 400-year-old Nakizumo festival those taking part have to do the exact opposite. The competition is open to student sumo wrestlers and they must attempt to make their child cry as quickly as possible, with the winning baby announced to be the healthiest. The contests can often see more than 100 babies and their fathers taking part and if they don’t cry within a short time a referee will enter the ring and make loud noises to try to frighten them.

Facial Hair Competition

With facial hair becoming ever more fashionable, it is little wonder that there is an official competition to see who can grow the best beard. The World Beard and Moustache Championships has thousands of people taking part, with competitors trying to style their facial hair to be as unique and attractive as possible. Those involved take the championships very seriously and have even managed to create replicas of the Golden Gate Bridge and other famous structures with their beards.

World Sauna Championships

The World Sauna Championships have been held in Finland every year since 1999. The event challenges those taking part to sit in a sauna in an upright position for as long as possible, while water is continuously added. Because of the danger posed by the 110 degrees Fahrenheit temperature, every competitor has to sign legal waivers that stop them from being able to sue the organizers in case of injury.

Nettle-Eating Championships

For the vast majority of people, nettles are something that should be avoided at all costs. They cause painful rashes and are generally unpleasant. Some people, though, actually seek out the harmful plant and attempt to eat as much as possible in an hour at the Nettle-Eating Championships. Based in Dorset, England, the competition sees people from around the world travelling to take part. Unfortunately, entrants are only allowed to use one thing to help ease the pain, they can drink as much beer as they like as they chomp down the nettles.

Air Guitar Championships

Although pretty much every person who has listened to a rock song will have performed air guitar at some point in their life, very few people take their performance seriously enough to actually compete against others. For those that do, the place to be is at the Air Guitar Championships in Finland. The officials rules say that entrants can use an acoustic or electric air guitar but no real instruments must be used at any time and backing bands can’t take part.

Rock Paper Scissors Championships

The World Rock Paper Scissors Society, an organization that was set up to promote Rock Paper Scissors and standardize the rules, has created a number of tournaments in recent times. The most famous is the International World Championship that has even been shown live on television through Fox Sports Net. Other event are held around the world, with the most popular being the UK Championship. The competitions essentially put all the contestants into a knockout tournament where they progress if they beat their opponent a set number of times.

Midget Throwing Contest

Midget Throwing, otherwise known as Dwarf Tossing, is a type of competition that has mainly only been practiced in Australia. The events see dwarves dressed in padded Velcro suits and thrown by those taking part, with competitors trying to achieve the greatest possible distance. The contests have remained controversial as some believe that they are offensive to dwarves, although others argue that it can be an essential source of income for those that take part.

10 Extreme Uses For Everyone's Favorite Soda: Coca-Cola

10 Extreme Uses For Everyone's Favorite Soda: Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola may top the charts as one of the world’s favorite soft drinks, but the uses that are beyond drinking can be a tad extreme. A lot of people around the world have discovered the syrupy, brown soda can be used to do a lot of things, including growing flowers and loosening the bolts on a vehicle. That is a bit more than just extreme. Imagine, the liquid that can dissolve rust is going into your stomach every time you pop open a can of Coca-Cola. Here are 10 uses for the can of soda in your fridge.

Fertilizer

Coca-Cola has been found to improve the overall quality of compost for growing vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Just add in a can to the mixture and you’re good to grow.

Loosening Bolts

If you find yourself with a bevy of rusted bolts, whether it is on a piece of machinery or a vehicle, simply pour some of the soda over the bolts. The soda will begin to eat away at the material, so you can remove the bolts later that day.

Defrosting Windshields

Anyone who lives in the north, specifically where there is a lot of cold weather, should know defrosting a windshield is a painful, annoying process. Pour some Coke over the window and you can see out of it in no time at all. Just make sure you wash it off after as it may leave sticky residue.

Hair Curler

You probably read that headline and thought to use the can of Coke and wrap it around the hair on your head. But no, instead simply pour some flat coke on your hair and within minutes you can rinse it off and you’ll be left with curly hair.

Moisturization

When you need to have clear, fresh looking skin, most people just go to a beautician or buy an over-priced product. Instead, use flat coke combined with your favorite moisturizer to ensure your skin appears brighter and smoother.

Car Batteries

Much like rusted bolts, a car battery that has seen a long life can be a pain in the butt to take care of. Pour just a little bit of Coca-Cola on the battery to erode the rust and bring it back to life.

Swimming Pool Cleaner

Instead of hiring an expensive agency, simply pour two liters of coke into your pool and then let it filter out naturally with the pump. The water will be clear before you know it.

Vintage Photographs

These days, it is almost impossible to print out a vintage photograph. Thankfully, you can take a normal photo and simply dip it into a bowl of coke, letting it soak for a moment. Upon the picture drying, the vintage look will be accomplished.

Removing Gum

In the odd chance that you get gum stuck in your hair, most people simply cut it out with a pair of scissors. Instead, take a can of Coca-Cola and pour it over the spot. The cola will work its magic, allowing the gum to be removed with ease.

Fading Hair Dye

When dyeing your hair, sometimes things can go wrong and it turns out too dark. If that happens, pour some coke over the area and the color will lighten up perfectly.

Millions of people have had procedures done to themselves so that they look prettier or younger, usually involving the removal of excess skin and fat or even having breast augmentations. These are just typical cases of plastic surgery though, there are many different types that have come into fashion because of a new trend or craze, leading to a huge demand for surgeons to carry out unusual operations on their patients.

Like many other forms of plastic surgery, the eyelash transplant was originally developed as a way to help burn victims who couldn’t grow back their eyelashes. The procedure is now available to anyone who can afford it. It involves taking hair from your head and implanting it into the eyelids, although the hair will continue to grow and will need to be cut regularly to ensure it remains at the proper length.

Grin Lift
